Description:
The SG3524 is a monolithic regulating pulse width modulator (PWM) integrated circuit that contains all the essential control circuitry for constructing switching power supplies, inverters, and regulators. It is a versatile and cost-effective chip, widely used for power control applications requiring fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation techniques.

How it works :

The SG3524 uses a feedback system to maintain a constant output voltage. The process is centered around its internal components:
  1. 5V Reference Voltage: The IC has an internal 5V reference regulator, which serves as a stable reference for the control circuitry.
  2. Programmable Oscillator: An external timing resistor (

    𝑅𝑇

    ) and timing capacitor (

    𝐶𝑇

) are used to set the operating frequency of the internal oscillator. This oscillator creates a linear voltage ramp across

  3. Error Amplifier and Comparator: A feedback signal from the power supply output is sent to the error amplifier. The amplifier compares this signal with the stable 5V reference. The amplified error signal is then fed into a high-gain comparator, which also receives the oscillator’s voltage ramp.
  4. Pulse-Width Modulation: The comparator’s output is a modulated pulse whose width is proportional to the error signal. This pulse controls the on/off time, or duty cycle, of the output switches.
  5. Pulse-Steering Flip-Flop: The modulated pulse is steered to the appropriate output transistors by a flip-flop that is toggled by the oscillator. The SG3524 has two uncommitted output transistors, enabling both single-ended and push-pull applications. In push-pull mode, the outputs alternate at half the oscillator’s frequency.
  6. Protective Circuitry: The SG3524 includes built-in current-limiting and shutdown features to protect the IC and connected devices from overload or overvoltage conditions.

Key features:

  • Complete PWM Control Circuitry: Integrates a voltage reference, oscillator, error amplifier, and output logic on a single chip.
  • Dual Outputs: Two uncommitted output transistors allow for push-pull or single-ended operation.
  • Wide Supply Voltage Range: Operates from 8V to 40V, accommodating many different applications.
  • Adjustable Frequency: The oscillator frequency can be programmed from 100Hz up to 300kHz using external components (

    𝑅𝑇

    and

    CTcap C sub cap T

    𝐶𝑇

  • Current Limiting and Shutdown: Features built-in circuits for protection against overcurrent and device shutdown.
  • Low Standby Current: Consumes typically 8mA, making it efficient during periods of low activity.

Common applications:

The versatility of the SG3524 makes it suitable for a wide range of power electronics applications:
  • DC-to-DC Converters: Used in various topologies, including buck, boost, flyback, and push-pull.
  • Power Supplies: Found in server power supplies and desktop PCs for voltage regulation.
  • Inverters: Integral in solar micro-inverters and other power inverters for converting DC to AC.
  • Voltage Doublers and Converters: Used in transformerless and polarity converter applications.
  • Motor Control: Provides PWM signals for controlling motors in appliances like washing machines.
