Desciption:

belonging to the 74LS (Low-power Schottky) series of TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) integrated circuits. Its primary function is to compare two 8-bit binary or Binary-Coded Decimal (BCD) words and determine if they are equal.

Key features:

  • 8-bit comparison: The IC is specifically designed to compare two 8-bit data inputs, which are typically labeled P and Q.
  • Identity output: The 74LS688 provides a single output pin,

    P=Q¯modified cap P equals cap Q with bar above

    𝑃=𝑄

    , that goes low (active-low) when the two 8-bit inputs are identical. It does not have separate outputs for “greater than” (

    P>Qcap P is greater than cap Q

    𝑃>𝑄

    ) or “less than” (

    P<Qcap P is less than cap Q

    𝑃<𝑄

    ) as some other magnitude comparators do.

  • Enable input: An active-low enable input (

    G¯cap G bar

    𝐺

    ) allows for controlling the comparison process. When the enable pin is high, the

    P=Q¯modified cap P equals cap Q with bar above

    𝑃=𝑄

    output is held high, regardless of the input values.

  • Totem-pole output: The 74LS688 features totem-pole outputs, which offer improved drive capabilities and faster switching times compared to open-collector outputs.

Pinout:

The 74LS688 is commonly available in a 20-pin dual in-line package (DIP). The pin assignments are as follows:

1-9 P0-P7 8-bit data input, word P
11-19 Q0-Q7 8-bit data input, word Q

Note that the pin numbers for inputs can vary depending on the package type and manufacturer. Always consult the specific datasheet for the correct pin configuration.
How it works
The 74LS688 is a digital combinational logic circuit. It uses a series of internal logic gates to perform a bit-by-bit comparison of the two input words, P and Q.
  1. Comparison logic: An AND gate is used to compare each corresponding bit pair (

    P0cap P sub 0

    𝑃0

    and

    Q0cap Q sub 0

    𝑄0

    ,

    P1cap P sub 1

    𝑃1

    and

    Q1cap Q sub 1

    𝑄1

    , etc.). The output of the AND gate is high only when both inputs are equal.

  2. Equality check: The outputs of all the individual bit-comparison AND gates are fed into a large OR gate. The output of the OR gate is high if at least one bit pair is not equal.
  3. Final output: The output of the OR gate is then inverted and passed through another gate, along with the enable input, to generate the final active-low

    P=Q¯modified cap P equals cap Q with bar above

    𝑃=𝑄

    output.

Applications :
The 74LS688 is a versatile component used in various digital electronic systems for tasks that require comparing two 8-bit words. Common applications include:
  • Memory address decoding: Comparing a desired memory address with the current address to enable a specific memory chip.
  • Data validation: Checking if input data matches a reference value.
  • Microcontroller and microprocessor systems: Used in control logic and data processing tasks.
  • High-speed logic circuits: Suitable for applications requiring fast and accurate data comparison.
  • Signal matching: Detecting when two 8-bit digital signals are identical.
