The DS1232 monitors three vital conditions for a microprocessor: power supply, software execution, and external override. First, a precision temperature-compensated reference and comparator circuit checks the state of VCC. When the voltage goes out of tolerance, the chip generates an internal power-down signal and forces the reset into the active state. Once VCC returns to the correct range, the DS1232 holds the reset signals active for at least 250 ms, giving the power supply and processor time to stabilize.

In addition, the DS1232 provides pushbutton reset control. It processes the pushbutton input and guarantees a minimum active reset pulse width of 250 ms. The internal timer also drives the reset signals into the active state if the strobe input does not go low before the timeout expires. Users can configure the watchdog timer to operate with timeout settings of approximately 150 ms, 600 ms, or 1.2 seconds.
